For Fungi Perfecti, LLC, research is a central part of how our company approaches mycology and product development.
We reinvest more than $1 million annually into mycological research at Fungi Perfecti, supporting laboratory studies, peer-reviewed publications, and human clinical research designed to explore mushroom mycelium and the products of our supplement brand, Host Defense® Mushrooms™.
Building on 40+ years of scientific research, we maintain a Research & Development team spanning mycology, chemistry, cellular biology, molecular biology, and environmental sciences. This work includes studying fungal biodiversity, mushroom biochemistry, and cultivation methods, as well as exploring potential wellness-related areas of interest that warrant continued investigation.*

Research That Helps Expand Mushroom Science
Fungi Perfecti’s research has included laboratory investigations, peer-reviewed publications, and human clinical studies. These efforts are intended to add to the broader body of knowledge about mushroom mycelium and fungal science at large. We also study how sustainable cultivation methods on our certified organic farm in Washington state may influence the quality of our Host Defense® functional mushroom supplements.

Understanding Mushroom Mycelium and Fermented Substrate
A peer-reviewed paper published in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine evaluated mushroom mycelium and the fermented substrate in-vitro using analytical methods and lab-based assays.

These findings continue to inform the formulation philosophy behind Host Defense® Mushrooms™ supplements, which are produced using certified organic mushroom mycelium cultivated through solid-state fermentation on our certified organic farm in Washington state.*
Human Research Around Immune-Related Measurements
Fungi Perfecti also collaborated on a Phase I/II randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled human clinical trial published in BMC Immunology evaluating a combination of Host Defense® Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor) and Host Defense® Agarikon (Fomitopsis officinalis) mushroom mycelium and their fermented substrates.

As one of the earlier brown-rice placebo-controlled human trials evaluating mushroom mycelium in this type of research setting, the study adds to the scientific literature examining how mushroom mycelium and its fermented substrate may interact with humans.*
Comparing Different Lion’s Mane Preparations
Published in the peer-reviewed journal Immuno, the study explored how Host Defense® Lion’s Mane mushroom mycelium may interact with human immune cells in vitro when placed under conditions simulating everyday challenge compared to a store-bought fruiting body extract formulated with a hot water extraction technique placed under the same conditions.
Study Details:

Extracts were evaluated under the same conditions: an extract made from Host Defense® mushroom mycelium and an extract made from imported fruiting bodies.

Researchers reported that the extract made from Host Defense® Lion’s Mane mushroom mycelium may support immune signaling pathways associated with calm yet primed immune activity, even after human immune cells were exposed to challenging conditions in vitro in a preclinical setting.*

By contrast, with cells placed under the same challenging conditions, the store-bought Lion’s Mane extract made from imported fruiting bodies did not show the same type of balanced support.*
In describing the in-vitro results, the authors used the phrase “calm under challenge” to characterize the marker pattern observed in response to the mycelium when placed under laboratory challenge conditions.
