The Genesis of Fungi Perfecti
In 1980, long before functional mushrooms became a mainstream staple in the supplement industry, Paul Stamets founded Fungi Perfecti, LLC. As a family-owned endeavor, the company was built on a radical, groundbreaking premise: that habitats have immune systems just like people, and mushrooms are the cellular bridges between them.
While others saw the Pacific Northwest’s forests as timber to be harvested, Paul studied a hidden world beneath their roots. He discovered a thriving underground community created by mushroom mycelium. Inspired by how it reaches out in a web of threadlike stands to form connections that support all life, Paul called mycelium “Earth’s natural internet.” As the largest and longest-living life-stage of the mushroom organism, mycelium is an ancient, intelligent network that cultivates the health and resilience of entire ecosystems.
One of Paul’s primary purposes in founding Fungi Perfecti was to fund his growing body of research into the enormous potential of mushroom mycelium to aid human and planetary health. Since then, a dedicated team of Fungi Perfecti scientists have studied and developed new and innovative ways that mushroom mycelium can benefit human health and wellness. These ardent efforts eventually led to the development of the pioneering mushroom supplement brand, Host Defense® Mushrooms™.*
A Legacy of Excellence and Innovation
Paul did not just study mycology; he redefined it. By lecturing extensively and authoring eight definitive books (including the seminal Mycelium Running), he helped transform a niche area of study into a global movement.
Paul’s contributions to the field have earned him prestigious accolades from the highest echelons of the scientific community. He was named an Invention Ambassador for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and received the National Mycologist Award from the North American Mycological Association (NAMA). Additionally, the Mycological Society of America (MSA) honored him with the Gordon and Tina Wasson Award.
His influence has even transcended science into popular culture, as seen in the Star Trek: Discovery series, which features a character, Lieutenant Commander Paul Stamets, named in his honor. These milestones reflect a lifetime of breaking barriers and establishing mycology as a critical pillar of modern science.
A Pioneer in the Lab: Investing in the Future
While many companies simply source ingredients, Paul has turned Fungi Perfecti into a powerhouse of research and development. Viewing the ancient Old Growth forests as a resource of incalculable value, his life’s work is to preserve the biodiversity of the planet through mycological solutions that will benefit us all. Paul’s philosophy, “MycoDiversity is Biosecurity,” became the North Star for a new generation of ecological advocates and health-conscious individuals.*
Due to Paul’s impact, the dedicated team of Fungi Perfecti scientists have made a considerable impact on the world’s understanding of how mycology can benefit both people and planet. Together, the team has published more than 60 peer-reviewed scientific journal articles, while Paul has authored over 30 himself. *
The Mission Forward
Fungi Perfecti remains a family-owned business, and its soul is in the lab and the forest. The company prioritizes the protection of rare strains of endangered mushroom species for the preservation of the planet, and it manages the success and development of the Host Defense® supplement line for the benefit of people.*
Paul continues to demonstrate that fungi offer powerful, practical solutions to support human health and the world we live in. Under Paul’s leadership, Fungi Perfecti does more than manage the important work of Host Defense; it advocates for the survival of the biosphere.*
"Our biosphere is quickly changing... Unless we put into action policies and technologies that can cause a course correction in the very near future, species diversity will continue to plummet. Fungi offer some powerful, practical solutions, which can be put into practice now." - Paul Stamets
